Students present fashion collections to a packed house

AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) -- Feathers, artichokes, bullets and studs were just some of the unique inspirations for student collections at this year's University of Texas Fashion Show.
Twenty-six senior fashion design students presented their collections to a packed audience at the Erwin Center.
The theme of the show was "Celebrate."
"The students really wanted to pick the name ‘Celebrate,' because it celebrated all the years they've spent studying," says Fashion Director Eve Nichols. "They wanted to celebrate their studies, to also celebrate the achievement of getting their collection done, their evening wear done, to celebrate working together, to celebrate the life of a professor that passed on and to celebrate the future."
"I was inspired by the 1920s, the new women," says designer Christine Scheer. "I've always liked feathers and sequins, and I wanted it to be really fun and look good on the runway."
From bathing suits to evening dresses and ready-to-wear, each designer brought their own unique visions to life in their garments.
"I wanted to use a lot of different colors and fabrics to create an artistic expression of my idea of design and fashion," says designer Amanda Schiller.
Taking objects that are usually uncommon in fashion apparel, designer Whitney Marbach incorporated bullets and European mosaics into her collection.
"I wanted to incorporate something new and different, something that has never been done, so I came up with the bullets idea," Marbach says.
Schiller says her inspiration came from an artichoke.
"The way the layers fold down is how I did my pedal skirt, was through these organic shapes and then manipulating them to be my own design," Schiller says.
"Clothes, really, when we think about it, the whole purpose of having nice clothes, good-quality clothes, that are well made, good color, nicely designed, they really uplift the spirit," Nichols says of fashion. "We are in the business of uplifting people's spirits and letting them get on with the important things that they want to do."

An eye-catching catwalk
Seniors show work at annual fashion show
By Rebecca Adams
UT proved itself as one of America's up-and-coming fashion houses in a fashion show that brought Longhorn pride to a new level. On Friday, the 25 graduating advanced apparel design seniors showcased their original designs in a celebration-themed fashion show put on by the University Fashion Group. The show took place at the Frank Erwin Center and was open to the public, drawing hundreds of style-wise attendees from the Austin community, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and even New York, America's own fashion capital.
The seniors created three outfits for their collection in addition to an evening or bridal gown, with a PowerPoint slide accompanying each designer's work to display the inspiration for their garments. The designers turned to "Little Shop of Horrors," Audrey Hepburn and even "The Jetsons" for inspiration, and the work that came from their muses did not disappoint.
Leslie Fender showcased a collection titled "Folk Lure" that was just as charming as its title. Her use of saffron for a skirt and cropped jacket was a delightful touch to her hippie aesthetic, and the detail on the sleeves and embroidery of her white mini-dress were impeccable.
The most innovative and striking collection of the night came from Whitney Marbach, who sent her models down the catwalk in evening gowns adorned with bullets and studs. The execution and construction of the studded leather jacket worn with a full-length chiffon gown was flawless and left every girl in the room with a sudden desire to add some metal to her wardrobe. Marbach showcased her versatility by crafting a delicate sky blue bridal gown with intricate lace detailing on the bodice for her finale piece.
The show was completely sponsored by the University Co-operative Society under the leadership of president and CEO George Mitchell. The fabric scholarships donated by the Co-op allowed the design students to invest in expensive fabrics that allowed them to create higher-quality garments.
"Fabrics cost thousands of dollars," said Eve Nicols, faculty sponsor of the UFG. "We really benefited tremendously from that."
In addition to receiving scholarships for the production of the garments, the students and members of the UFG received invaluable experience in what it takes to put on a large-scale fashion show.
"Everyone in the apparel business does fashion shows, whether it's a store doing a trunk show or a small in-house show, or whether it's an individual designer doing their own collection," Nicols said. "So [the students] get that experience which they can then take forward into their professional career."
The show was dedicated to Ardis M. Rewerts, associate professor in the Division of Textiles and Apparel who passed away last fall. The students "wanted to celebrate her life," Nicols said.
The theme of the show was not only drawn from the students' beloved professor, but also from the hard work they put into the show and their garments.
"They wanted to celebrate the achievement of going through all of these classes and getting to this point," Nicols said. "It was great positive energy that brought this word up."
The most eye-catching piece of the night came from Virginia Egal in the form of a cream and burnt orange evening gown adorned with a large longhorn decal on the bodice. The garment was a perfect finale for a show so full of school pride and student gratification.
"When we create and we provide clothes for people that are well made, well designed and have wonderful colors, we can actually help people to have a psychological element of joy because when we wear something that feels good, it lifts our spirits too," Nicols said. "It's a very positive thing to be involved in."

Dell's InspironTM 14 - Yours is the star of the show
We all love that one piece of jewelry that would just stand out from the outfit, but yet, still not overshadow the whole look of the outfit. Usually a big long shiny necklace will do it, but its quite hard to match big shiny things with outfits. One I really like are bangles. Statement bangles.
I remembered featuring Vita Bangles last year and it was a hit amongst the stars who wore them religiously. Today, we shall feature another designer who created this really awesome crafted wooden bangles called Wam Bands.
Whitney Marbach is a designer who created really awesome dresses incorporated with bullets earlier last year (We shall feature that one in another post). But this time around, she has created this funky Wam Bands, which are really bangles with an awesome edge.
You can easily put this Wam Band on your daily outfit and it would look awesome. This Silver one is called Maximus Silver.
Wam bands were also featured in Harpers Bazaar US just recently. It goes on perfectly with that Chanel Bangle too!

The black one is called Bazaar Black

Stelios White/Silver is so pretty. I like this the best! Very chic.
Wam Bands are priced at USD$120 each and is being sold online at Whitneymarbach.com.

Dear Twolia Divas,
I just received a press release from an exciting new designer named Whitney Marbach. Right off the bat her WAM BANDS struck me as a fashion do this summer. They are bold, substantial pieces with attitude to spare. I love the idea of wearing them now with your delicate summer frocks and then using the edgy look as your transition into the rocker-glam vibe that is going to take center stage in the season’s to come. Made of polished resin, these handcrafted pieces are inspired by the armor of Greek Warriors. I just love the force and power of them! What do you think? Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
Happy Accessorizing!

Check out this WAM band ($120.00) from designer Whitney Marbach. Marbach, a University of Texas at Austin alumna and former Harper's Bazaar intern, was inspired by the armor of Greek warriors.
As Marbach told FashionLedge.com, WAM bands were designed for a "modern woman... who loves to be fashion-forward and isn't afraid of changing it up... someone who is unafraid to make a statement and stand out in a crowd, in a great and bold way."
The resin bands come in a variety of cool colors, including silver, beige, white/silver, and the eternally chic black. For the faint of heart, wear them separately. Feeling bold? We recommend stacking them high on your arm for an eye-catching look.
